Important Information regarding Large Animal Services

Over the last 10 years, you have trusted us to help lead you in a path that was best for your livestock and business.  We take this responsibility extremely seriously and are incredibly grateful for the trust you place in us.  We want to Thank You for that!  Unfortunately, we need to inform you of the changes that are occurring with the services provided at Creekside Veterinary Clinic.

Effective January 1st, we will no longer be offering large animal veterinary services, including bovine, equine, ovine, porcine, and caprine care. This decision was not made lightly, and with heavy hearts we have made this change in the best interest of you, our valued client, and our business.

To assist with this transition, we are referring our current cattle, sheep, and goat clients to Dr. Aaron Martin of Martin Veterinary Consulting & Services. We have established a strong professional relationship with Dr. Martin and believe he will provide excellent care consistent with the services you have come to expect.  Dr. Martin can be reached at 605-680-9934 or via email at [email protected].

For all equine care we are recommending Central Dakota Animal Clinic in Platte 605-337-2659 or Dakota Large Animal Clinic in Harrisburg 605-338-5558.

We want to make this transition period as seamless as possible.  If you need assistance transferring records or have any questions, our team will be happy to help.

Although we are transitioning away from large animal care, our commitment to providing high-quality veterinary services to our small animal patients remains unchanged. We are confident this change will allow us to continue delivering the best possible care maintaining our practice philosophy of being Compassionate Stewards of Animal health.

Thank you for your understanding and committed support through this transition. It has been a privilege serving you and your livestock. All The Best,
Creekside Veterinary Clinic

The True Cost of Owning a Dog: What Every Pet Parent Should Know

From your friends at Creekside Veterinary Clinic

Bringing a new dog into your family is one of life’s greatest joys—but it’s also a big responsibility. Beyond love, time, and care, it’s important to be prepared for the financial side of pet ownership.

Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect, so you can plan ahead and keep your new best friend happy and healthy for years to come.

Upfront and First-Year Costs

The first year is often the most expensive, with one-time purchases, vaccines, and procedures. Most new dog owners spend between $1,500 and $4,000 during the first 12 months.

Common first-year expenses include:

  • Adoption or purchase:
    • Adoption fees typically range from $30–$455, often including vaccines, microchipping, and spay/neuter surgery.
    • Breeder costs can vary widely—from $775 to over $4,700, depending on the breed.
  • Veterinary care:
    • Spay/neuter surgery: $90–$650 (if not included in the adoption fee)
    • Puppy exams & vaccines: Up to $470 for the initial series and checkups
    • Microchipping: $25–$60
  • Essential supplies:
Crate, bed, bowls, collar/leash, toys, and training tools—$200–$1,000 depending on your setup and preferences.

Annual & Ongoing Expenses

Once you’re past the first year, costs generally stabilize. On average, expect to spend $1,400 to $4,300 per year, depending on your dog’s size, health, and lifestyle.

Typical yearly expenses include:

  • Food & treats: $450–$1,500
  • Routine veterinary care: $200–$600 for exams, vaccines, and lab work
  • Preventive care: $100–$500 for flea, tick, and heartworm prevention
  • Dental cleanings: $300–$800 per year (a key part of long-term health)
  • Grooming: $30–$500 depending on breed and coat type
  • Toys, supplies, and enrichment: up to $700 annually
  • Boarding or pet-sitting: $100–$300+ if you travel

Unexpected & Variable Costs

Even with good planning, surprises can happen.

  • Emergency care: Illness or injury can cost hundreds—or even thousands—of dollars.
  • Pet insurance: Monthly premiums add an extra cost but can save you money when emergencies arise.
  • Chronic or senior care: Older pets or certain breeds may need ongoing medications or special diets.
  • Property damage: Puppies or anxious dogs can be hard on furniture and floors!

The Takeaway

Owning a dog is one of the most rewarding experiences, but it’s also a long-term financial commitment. Planning ahead for both routine and unexpected costs ensure your pet gets the care they deserve at every stage of life.

At Creekside Veterinary Clinic, we’re here to help you make the best decisions for your dog’s health and well-being—from that first puppy visit to senior care.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month

Good dental health is more than just a pretty smile.

Poor dental health can put both your pet’s health and your pocketbook at risk. “Dog breath”—or a cat with a foul-smelling mouth—can be a sign of untreated dental conditions. Without treatment, your pet may be at risk for pain and other health problems.

Routine cleanings can help prevent periodontal disease and save money in the long run. A 2013 analysis conducted by Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI) showed that the average cost per pet to prevent dental disease is just one-third of the average cost of treating dental disease.

Also important, cleanings allow for a complete examination of the mouth, which can detect hidden health problems. Even if your pet’s breath smells fine, there still could be problems that you can’t see, but we can spot during a cleaning.

Schedule your pet’s dental checkup with us now. We’ll perform a thorough exam to make sure your pet is healthy, and recommend a professional cleaning if needed. We also can show you how to brush your pet’s teeth. Brushing is the single most effective thing you can do to keep your pet’s teeth healthy between dental cleanings.

We’re committed to your pet’s health and wellness, and we know that you are as well. We offer 20% off all dentals for the entire month of February! Book your appointment today!
